چکیده

Pitch movements at the boundaries of sentence-medial and final phrases in Japanese can provide a cue to the speaker's intention. For example, the phrase /Nagano-de/ ' in Nagano' can be uttered with different rising and/or falling pitch movements on the the final mora /de/ to convey meanings such as clarification, incredulity, prominence in the discourse, insistence, etc. The identification of these movements is important not only for spoken language understanding systems, but also for naturalsounding speech synthesis. The current study examines F0 shape, height, and alignment characteristics of four distinct sentencemedial boundary rises. We compare these types with accented and focused unaccented words containing identical phonetic segments, and discuss a number of different possible phonological analyses of the pitch movements.

A Weighted-Constraint Model of F0 Movements

This dissertation develops a grammar of phonetic implementation of phonologically significant F0 (pitch) events, which is applicable across languages. Through production studies of various languages, we show that phonetic universals exist which govern phonetic realization of the phonological representations of tones. In the previous literature, there have been two conflicting views concerning t...

Pitch range control of Japanese boundary pitch movements

Boundary pitch movements (BPMs) are tones that occur at the end of prosodic phrases in Japanese and contribute to the pragmatic interpretation of certain utterance such as questioning, continuation, and emphasis. Final lowering and boundary pitch movements in spontaneous Japanese

Standard theory of the prosodic structure in Tokyo Japanese treats both the final lowering and boundary pitch movements as the properties of utterance node. Validity of this treatment was examined by means of corpus-based analyses of spontaneous speech. The results showed that while final lowering could be treated as a property of utterance, boundary pitch movement could not. The latter should ...

Pitch Accent in Japanese: Implementation by the C/D Model

In Tokyo Japanese, lexical accent is implemented by pitch pattern control, while phrasal stress patterns, along with pitch variation, convey non-lexical information in discourse. The C/D model represents pitch control by the tonal melody and stress control by the skeletal organization of the utterance. Phonetic implementation of pitch contours is exemplified here for different lexical accent pa...
